Recipes Featuring Original Australian Dry Gin
Gin and Cucumber Basil Smash
Ingredients
➤ 2 tbsp granulated sugar for decorating the glass (optional)
➤ 8 basil leaves, plus more for garnish
➤ 8 slices cucumber, about 5mm thick, plus more for garnish
➤ 2 tbsp sugar syrup (see tip below)
➤ 50 ml (1.75 oz) gin, Original Australian Dry of course!
➤ 1 tbsp lemon juice
➤ Crushed ice
➤ Splash of tonic water
Method
1. Prepare the Glass: Make a sugar rim on the glass by dipping the rim of the glass in a saucer of water. Then spread the sugar on another saucer and dip the rim of the glass in the sugar.
2. Mix the Cocktail: Place the basil leaves and cucumber in a cocktail shaker and muddle (or gently bash) until the basil and cucumber are bruised and the scent is released. Add the sugar syrup, gin, lemon juice, and ice.
3. Shake: Shake vigorously until frost forms on the outside of the cocktail shaker.
4. Pour and Serve: Fill your glass with ice and strain the cocktail into the glass. Top up with tonic water and decorate with strips of cucumber and basil leaves.
Tip: To make sugar syrup, combine equal parts of sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes. Let it cool completely before using. You can store the leftover syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month.
